Important Information for Traveller’s Diarrhoea or Vomiting
Traveller’s diarrhoea is an important illness which requires prompt action to ensure it does not evolve into a more serious health issue. Prevention is key. Travelan is recommended as a preventative therapy. Avoid all suspicious foods and drinks where you believe proper sanitation was not involved in its preparation. If diarrhoea or vomiting presents as a problem, the first step should be initiating rehydration therapy using or rehydration salts such as Gastrolyte or Hydralyte. Antidiarrhoeals such as lmodium or Gastrostop should be reserved for when they are necessary only. If diarrhoea or vomiting persist, the stool becomes bloody, or if you are unable to maintain adequate fluidintake, it is important you seek medical attention either by contacting the concierge of your accommodation, informing your travel operator or contacting your local Australian Embassy.
